our beloved shetland…
Dotty the one-eyed wonder
Dotty, the cherished Shetland pony at Little Park Farm, recently faced a challenging time. Late in March, under the clear spring sky, Dotty needed to undergo surgery at Cliffe Equine Veterinary Surgery to remove her left eye due to an injury.
For a decade now, Dotty, along with her constant companion Tilly, has captured the affections of all at the farm. They’ve roamed our 20 acres of Sussex countryside and woodland, with Tilly often being the more outgoing, while Dotty maintained a reserved yet captivating presence.
Unfortunately, Dotty developed a serious eye condition — possibly an ulcer or injury from roaming the woodlands — that led to a rupture. The expertise of Cliffe vets was sought, and they concluded that removal of the eye was necessary for Dotty’s wellbeing.
On the day of the surgery, Dotty and Tilly traveled to the clinic with remarkable calm, exhibiting trust and adaptability despite their usual routine. The staff at Cliffe, particularly Lottie, provided exemplary care, ensuring the surgery and aftercare were successful.
Whislt at the vets, we also took the opportunity to give Dotty a wash and shampoo, quite a rare treat! She’s in the process of loosing her winter cost, and can get quite itchy.
And here the two Shetlands prepare for the journey home, once again, acting remarkably calm considering how little time they’ve spent in a horse box.
Now, Dotty is in the healing phase, with rest and medication being paramount. We anticipate her return to her spirited activities, albeit adapting to a new perspective. We’re all adjusting to the best ways to interact with her to make her comfortable and safe.
While Dotty convalesces in the stable with Tilly, we are taking every measure to ensure a complete recovery before she resumes her exploration of the farm.
We invite our guests at the farm to join us in supporting Dotty through her recovery. And of course, guests are welcome to come and stay at the farm — not only to meet the resilient Dotty but also to experience the serene beauty of Little Park Farm.
